Online Dating Ads

Anne Jacobs

Online dating ads seem to be a fun way to meet people who are a lot cooler than the Joes and Janes running around your high school. But is it too good to be true? Keep in mind that online ads also offer the perfect job and body "just a click away." Let's face it -- on the web, skepticism is healthy. So what's behind the "perfect date"?

Well, it's hard to know. Online daters don't always reveal their true selves. They're often more interested in "creating an imaginary self that's impressively snarky and carefree."1 A 40-year-old can type the words, "I'm a cute blond sophomore" as well as you can.

But be aware -- lots of people are falling for the fake descriptions. Online dating can be dangerous, even deadly. A 16-year-old girl's body was recovered from the sea after it was suspected that she was contacted by her murderer through an Internet dating service.2 Make sure you are not giving personally identifiable information on the Internet, whether it be through instant messaging, chatrooms, or online dating services.
