Exploring the Internet: What You Can Do Online

Anne Jacobs

Chances are you already know a lot about the Internet. Teens pick up the technology quickly. But if you happen to be new to the Net, it's easy to learn and fun to use.

Communication
The Internet is a great communication tool. Here are three ways you can use it.

Chat. Online chat can be a fun way to talk to your friends or people you've never met. But remember - logging into a chatroom is like putting your telephone number in a public restroom. You just don't know who will have it after that. So be smart about where you chat and how you identify yourself. Protect yourself by protecting your information.

E-mail. With electronic mail you can keep in touch with friends anywhere in the world without stamps or long-distance charges.

IM. Instant messaging is like a personal chatroom. You can talk in real time.

Education
The Internet can also help you with homework. Search engines will quickly find web pages that match keywords you use. You can consult dictionaries, encyclopedias, math tutors, and information on almost any subject you need. Just remember to give credit to the sources you use when you write a paper.

Be aware that while many web sites have accurate information, others don't. So be wary of everything you read.

Entertainment
Listen to the radio, watch movies, read magazines, or play computer games. The Internet is full of ways to kick back.

Shopping
Clothes, CDs, pizza, plane tickets - you name it, and it's for sale online. But be careful with your credit-card number. Make sure a site is secure and reputable before giving your personal information.

Whether you want to learn, relax, or shop, the Internet is a great tool. As you become comfortable with the technology, you will find the Internet a useful resource for you.
